1980 Rickenbacker 330 in Burgundyglo; Paul Weller Tribute "Carnaby Street"
So someone in the Rickenbacker world I admire recently posted on the Rickenbacker Facebook page that there was a rare 1981 Burgundyglow Rickenbacker 330 model signed by Peter Buck (REM guitarist) up for sale. I had a brief look and admired... Then, just on a whim, I did a quick internet search for a similar vintage model and stumbled onto this rare gem, languishing at a Midwest Guitar Center. After thinking about it for about 10 seconds, I pulled the trigger, and here she is...
Lore is that Paul Weller played the same model and color guitar (his was a 1974, I believe) at the start of The Jam. In fact, his Burgundyglo Rickenbacker was the first Rickenbacker he ever owned which he played some of those earliest Jam numbers on. This particular guitar is incredibly clean for its age -- sturdy; straight; very low, clean action; perfect electronics; and fabulous sounding pickups. I hadn't seen one of these early 80's Burgundy models for some time, and so felt like I wanted to add it to my small collection. I've even managed to source the correct non-gluey adhesive "Carnaby Street" sticker identical to the one Weller slapped on his Burgundy 330 back in '77/78 (you can remove that, of course...). This one also comes with a really cool original hard shell case, form-figured to this particular guitar model with a removable factory cushion in the neck cavity, which is a really nice protective feature. A beautiful, rare, and very Weller-esque guitar package... $4999.
